What is the Ocean Access Protection Fund?

The Ocean Access Protection Fund (OAPF) was formed to collect funds for legal action against policies that do not recognize the conservation efforts of fishermen, or impact recreational access to the ocean on behalf of all California anglers and outdoor enthusiasts concerned with maintaining public access.

Mission

Our mission: To generate financial resources for legal actions on behalf of all conservation minded recreational anglers, ensure recreational fishing access and promote sustainable fisheries management. We seek non-biased resolution of fisheries issues, and will work fervently to ensure that policies potentially impacting ocean access are designed and implemented using sound science, stakeholder involvement and unfettered public participation.

Who is Behind Us?

The OAPF is being spearheaded by United Anglers of Southern California.  This effort is a collaboration of committed and like-minded organizations and user groups which includes the Partnership for Sustainable Oceans, the American Sportfishing Association, supporting members of the Avalon Tuna Club, Coastside Fishing Club, International Game Fish Association, Kayak Fishing Association of California, National Marine Manufacturers Association, NorCal Kayak Anglers, Southern California Marine Association, Sportfishing Association of California and the Watermen’s Alliance.

Who Are We Fighting For?

Everybody who enjoys fishing in our state’s ocean waters, whether from surf, pier, powerboat or kayak. We are also protecting the interests of all those who treasure open access to our ocean and the coast, from sport divers and surfers to swimmers and beachcombers. We also represent the interests of businesses tied to recreational fishing and boating, such as tackle shops, fuel docks, hotels, marinas and boat dealerships.

IT’S TIME FOR CALIFORNIA ANGLERS TO UNITE

The OAPF is supporting a challenge of the implementation of the Marine Life Protection Act in California.  This is the first project being undertaken by the fund and its legal representatives.

HELP US FIGHT THE FLAWED MARINE LIFE PROTECTION ACT PROCESS IN THE COURTS!

Action has already begun on behalf of anglers and all Californians who treasure recreational access to our ocean waters. We need your help to keep this important effort going and protect ocean access statewide, for today and future generations. We have a great team of legal experts and broad-based industry and grass-roots support.  The California law firm of Allen Matkins Leck Gamble Malloy & Latsis LLP —with 210 attorneys in five offices — is working on our behalf.

What can you do? Plenty! Our strength comes from the collective effort, energy and resources of anglers and outdoor enthusiasts across the state. Backed by deep corporate pockets, environmentalists are driving California’s MLPA process towards their desired conclusion (more restricted public access), regardless of what science, economics and even procedure dictate. The flaws and contradictions of this process across Southern, Central and Northern Central California are now public record, and we will use these facts to challenge the process in the courts.
